Halkidiki  - what to visit

Polichrono


Polichrono village is an ideal place to stay in Kassandra Chalkidiki as it is around the centre of the peninsula. From here one can visit western side of Kassandra, following a road inside the forest. Polichrono is only 100 km away from Thessaloniki and has a rich history. Excavations reveal many ancient treasures. An interesting historical site is the ancient town. It has a long organized beach, where one can walk, swim, or do watersports. 

 

A great place to visit for nature lovers is Mavrobara lake, 3km west of Polichrono, at 300m altitude. There you can see turtles of the protected Emydidae spieces, swiming in the lake.  The site is full of wild vegetation, and it can be reached through walking routes.

 

Chanioti

 

Chanioti village is very close to Polichrono (4 km away) and is also a great place to stay, as it is at the centre of the peninsula. Chanioti is a cosmopolitan touristic site the summer months, with beautiful sandy beaches and vivid nightlife. It is full of small parks, squares and high perennial trees.

 

Most visitors are gathered around the village 's main square. There you can see various artists drawing or selling their artifacts. In the main square there is a small amphitheatre, where various festivals take place. 

Places in Halkidiki, Kassandra, one can visit include:

 

- Petralona cave, on the road from Thessaloniki to Kassandra. The first man (Homo Sapiens), 700000 years old, was found in the cave, which is full of stalactites and stalagmites. 

 

- The impressive Potidea Canal in Nea Potidea and the castle ruins in the same village.

 

- Afitos village, where are located a few traditional churches, the ruins of ancient Afitos, Vrisitsa and Moudouni springs. The village has a lovely view.

 

- Several wetlands, and places of ecological interest, such as Maurobara lake, 2km west of Polichrono, at 300m altitude, with the famous sea turtles of Emydidae spiecies. Other wetlands are Stauronikita and Geraniou wetlands in N. Fokea, and wetlands in Sani village. All of them are protected by NATURA 2000 program. 

 

- Healing waters of springs in Agia Paraskeui village, where you can enjoy health benefits of healing spa and other commodities.

 

- Cave in Agia Paraskeui.

 

- Open theatre of Siviri, where concerts and other events and festivals take place.

 

- Stavronikitas Byzantine tower in Sani.

 

Cape Kanastreo, with magnificent view, 6km from Paliouri village, ideal for romantic evenings.

 

- Region in the begining of Loutra - Agia Paraskeui has also a magnificent view.

 

- Glarokavos sea-lake in Pefkochori.

 

- The lighthouse in Posidi village.
